Pelvic pain is a common and complex symptom in gynaecology and may be acute or chronic. When it persists for more than 6 months, it is defined as chronic pelvic pain and requires specialised evaluation.
Endometriosis is one of the most common causes, but not the only one.
What is pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain refers to pain located:
- in the lower abdomen
- in the pelvis
- in the lower back or perineum
It may be related to:
- menstruation
- sexual intercourse
- urination or bowel movements
- or be constant, without a clear trigger
Possible causes of pelvic pain
Pelvic pain may have:
- gynaecological causes
- urological causes
- gastrointestinal causes
- musculoskeletal causes
- neuropathic causes
Common gynaecological causes include:
- endometriosis
- pelvic inflammatory disease
- adhesions
- fibroids
- ovarian cysts
